How it works

Assistoken starts from a simple idea: the financial decision can be the same, while the support needed to understand it can be different.

This page explains that concept — not a finished product.

Access is not the same as understanding

A person may be able to open a banking app, find a balance, and press pay.

They may still not be able to answer:

  • What does NOK 600 mean in my finances?

  • Can I afford this?

  • How much will I have left?

  • What does this agreement mean?

  • What are the consequences if I choose this?

  • Do I understand this well enough, or do I want support?

Assistoken is exploring that gap.

Same decision. Different support.

Two people can face exactly the same financial decision and need very different information to understand it.

The decision: A purchase costs NOK 600.

Person A
Pay NOK 600?

Person B
This costs NOK 600. You have NOK 1,000. After the purchase, you will have NOK 400 left.

Person C
The same decision can be presented visually, using symbols, simplified choices or alternative communication — with options such as I understand, Explain more, or Ask for support.

The financial decision is the same. The way it is understood does not have to be.

Not a simplified bank for disabled people

This distinction matters.

Assistoken is not:
Disability or diagnosis → simplified interface

Two people with the same diagnosis can have very different abilities, preferences, and support needs.

The same person can handle a familiar everyday purchase independently, and need much more explanation for a subscription, a loan, an unfamiliar contract, or a large purchase.

The concept is:

Individual + situation + financial decision → appropriate support

not

Diagnosis → predefined support level

Where the intelligence comes in

Adaptive support is meant to combine three kinds of information.

Domain and population knowledge
Structured knowledge about financial decisions, accessibility barriers, abilities, and support needs.

Individual understanding
An evolving picture of how this person understands financial information, communicates, makes choices, and benefits from different kinds of support.

Context
What is happening now: the decision, the amount, available resources, possible consequences, and other relevant circumstances.

Adaptive reasoning brings those together to suggest what information and what level of support may be appropriate for this person, in this situation.

That is what we mean by adaptive financial intelligence.

The technology should support the decision — not make it

The goal is not a system that says:
You are not allowed to buy this.

It is closer to:

Here is what this decision means for you.

Conceptually:

  • Individual → makes the decision

  • Technology → supports understanding

  • Trusted person → supports when needed or wanted

The purpose is greater participation in one’s own financial life — not another layer of control.

Support should not be permanently fixed

If someone becomes familiar with a type of decision and needs less explanation, unnecessary support should be able to fall away.

If the same person meets a new or more complex situation, more support may become appropriate.

Understand → Support → Decide → Outcome → Learn → Adapt

The question is not:
What level of support does a person with this diagnosis need?

It is:
What does this individual need in order to understand this decision in this situation?

Families and trusted supporters

Assistoken is not meant to remove families, staff, guardians, or other trusted people when their support is valuable.

They should also not automatically become the decision-maker.

The aim is a better balance:

Too little support ← Appropriate support → Unnecessary control

That is why we talk about financial autonomy, not only financial independence.

Autonomy does not always mean doing everything alone. It means as much understanding, participation, and control as possible.

Maximum autonomy. Minimum necessary support.

Banks and existing services

Assistoken does not have to replace a bank, a payment service, or an existing platform.

A longer-term possibility is a layer with or alongside services people already use:

Bank or financial service
→ adaptive financial intelligence

→ information and support adapted to the person and the situation

→ the individual understands and decides

Whether that later means an API, embedded technology, an SDK, a standalone experience, or something else is not decided. That has to be developed and tested with users, institutions, and technology partners.
